Free Yogurt For The First 50 Readers!

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

The wait is over! Click on the “Try Me Free” tab on the widget above and enter your address to receive a coupon good for a free four-pack of Yoplait Fiber One yogurt. This offer is limited to the first 50 to respond on a first come, first serve basis. The widget will display a message once all the free coupons are depleted, and a coupon for $1.00 will appear.

And if all the free coupons are gone by the time you read this, then check over at Contest Corner. I’m doing a 50 coupon giveaway over there as well, so you are welcome to try your luck there if the free coupons have already been depleted here!

In addition to sponsoring this giveaway, Yoplait also sent me some free samples of Fiber One Yogurt in Strawberry and Key Lime Pie. I enjoyed the flavors that I tried – the portion sizes were just right for me, and I appreciate that it has 5 grams of fiber. There is no substitute for eating a balanced diet, but I am all for “Sneaking in” some extra fiber whenever possible. I also liked the fact that each serving was only 50 calories! The yogurt is sweetened with aspartame, so those who do not care for artificial sweetener may notice a difference in flavor, but it didn’t bother me.

Here’s a little more information on Fiber One yogurt, courtesy Yoplait:

Online Purchases: Coffee & Snuggle

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

Here’s some purchases that arrived in the mail this week:

This is the $3 coffee I ordered last week. I made a batch of it this morning and so far, I’ve been enjoying it. They included some coupons in my package, one of which is a “Buy-one-get-one-free” voucher. After looking at the prices, I am considering possibly placing one more order before I cancel the membership. At first glance, it seems that it might be a lower price with the coupon than what I usually get at Safeway, if the shipping isn’t high. But I haven’t looked into it thoroughly yet, so I’ll keep you posted and let you know what happens when I do cancel the membership. Of course, I could buy canned coffee in bulk for less, but I love to buy these flavored blends because they are one of my favorite luxuries!

And this is the .38 cent Snuggle fabric softener that I bought on Sunday – .76 cents total for 52 loads. That’s roughly a penny and a half per wash, so not bad.

Have you snagged any good deals online this week?

Coupon Funded Menu Corner – A Few Frugal Recipes

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

Wednesday’s Menu:

Lunch – Quesadillas:
I like to make a simple, yummy quesadilla by filling a tortilla with black beans and covering with chopped cilantro, garlic, and cheese. I seal it with a second tortilla and broil it in the oven until done. (That’s coconut oil coating the pan, in case you were wondering.)
We had some leftover Chinese food in the fridge, so I re-invented it for dinner:
I stir-fried the leftovers and added peanuts from the stockpile to fill it out. I love peanuts in stir-frys because they add so much flavor. I served it on a bed of Jasmine rice and with a side of egg flour soup. I’ve had this soup mix in my cupboard for ages and finally decided to make it – it was really nice!
We also has green tea with the dinner (which you’ll notice is actually being served in a Sake set – those were just the smallest cups I had on hand!) and mango pudding for dessert.
Thursday’s menu:
I took the leftover rice from the previous night’s dinner and combined it with chopped onion, cheese, cilantro and eggs to make a nice omelette, served with half an orange.

For dinner, I made homemade chili/bean stew. I didn’t follow a recipe – I used some of the suggestions here and just made up the rest. Here’s what I did:
I cut two tomatoes (given to me straight from a relative’s garden), chopped some onion, and added in some cilantro just for fun. What can I say, we love cilantro!
I cooked it in coconut oil for a few minutes, then added three cans of black beans. I let it simmer for a few more minutes, then added curry powder, turmeric, and coriander. I know that’s an unusual combination of spices, but I don’t keep chili powder on hand because I find it’s usually too spicy for me, while I can handle mild curry seasonings fine.
Next, I added about 1 cup of spaghetti sauce and about 2 cups of beef broth. I often use spaghetti sauce in place of tomato sauce – sounds weird, but it can be done! I just added the liquid until it looked right to me, but you could use more or less according to your tastes.
While the chili cooked, I got to work on some bread bowls. I took one loaf of homemade bread, cut it in half, and scooped out the middle. I took the bread cores and served them on the side for dipping into the stew.
I let the chili simmer for one hour, and then dished it into the bread bowls and topped with a little cheese. It was very nice – the bread bowls were huge (it was half a loaf of bread after all!), so enough of it was leftover for lunch the next day in addition to the big pot of chili. Bread bowls re-heat surprisingly well!

Mark Your Calendar: Free Yogurt For 50 Super Coupon Girl Readers on 10/21

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Since I always share any good deals I find, I often link to free coupon and rebate offers. I love it when companies offer complimentary coupons on their websites, because it’s such a quick and easy way to save money. But here’s a twist on my normal “Free Coupon” post: Yoplait Yogurt has offered to give out free product coupons right here on Super Coupon Girl! On Wednesday, October 21st at 9:00 AM PST, you will be able to fill out a form here on Super Coupon Girl to receive a free coupon good for a four-pack of Yoplait Fiber One Yogurt. This offer will be limited to the first 50 readers who respond, and I’m sure they will go quick, so be here early if you’d like to sign up. I will also be offering 50 free coupons on my sister site, Contest Corner, so if all the coupons are gone when you get here, you are welcome to sign up at Contest Corner if they are still available there.

Yoplait also sent me some samples of Fiber One yogurt to try, and Jai and I enjoyed taste-testing them. You’ll be able to read more about the yogurt and what we thought of the flavors in next week’s post.

So between the giveaway here and the giveaway on Contest Corner, I’ll be giving 100 readers free yogurt! I feel like Santa!

Online Deals: Inexpensive Coats

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

I seem to be finding a lot of online deals recently, and I wanted to share this in case any of you are in the market for a new winter coat. Last night I read on SlickDeals that MetroStyle clothing is offering a coupon code for 40% off one item of clothing, which can be used on clearance items, including these clearance coats. This long faux-leather coat caught my eye – the picture you see here is the same style and color that I ordered. The coat was originally $89.99, but after the clearance reduction and coupon, it came to $17.99 + $6.99 for shipping. This looks warmer than what I have, and it’s pretty cute, so $24.98 was a good buy on an item I need. As of this writing, the coat is still available – enter MS4YOU at checkout to receive the discount.

I have a hard time finding good coats that are in the kind of style that I like and don’t cost a fortune. What’s worked for me in the past is shopping Ebay – the last coat I bought was a really nice dress jacket that was $10, and I also found a fabulous vintage fur coat for 1 penny. (Yes, 1 penny! I think the shipping was about $8.)

Shopping Trip – October 13th

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

I haven’t been to the store for a while, and we were low on supplies. So I did some stocking up at Safeway:

Total spent: $32.01
Total before coupons: $46.89
View receipt

Got:

1 package of tortillas (10 count) – Safeway had an advertised sale on Mission tortillas for $1.99, but they were all out of the variety that was on sale, so they substituted this “low fat” package for the same price.
4 2-liter bottles of Wild Cherry Pepsi – a treat for the flu-stricken! I was only planning on buying 2 bottles, but with the sale they were having it was a better deal to get four.
2 boxes of Kashi Go Lean Crunch – on sale for $3.00, used two $3.00/1 coupons that I received in the mail from Vocalpoint, which doubled; making the final price free plus $1.00 in overage.
2 cans of refried beans – on sale for .89 cents, final price: $1.78
2 boxes of Coffee Mate powder singles – on sale for $1.29 each, used one “Buy one, get one free” coupon from the 8/09 Red Plum newspaper inserts. This will be handy to have on hand for emergencies when I run out of coffee creamer!
1 24-pack of toilet paper – price: $4.99
2 32 oz bags of cheese – on sale for $4.49 each, for a total of $8.98
2 gallons of milk – on sale for $3.98 for 2
2 16 oz bottles of International Delight – on sale for $2.19 each, used two .55/1 printables, which doubled; making the final price $1.14 each.
1 pint of Starbucks ice cream – on sale for $3.00, used one free coupon that I received for signing up on Facebook back in July. Although the ice cream was on sale, the coupon automatically took off the full price of $4.49, so I ended up with $1.49 in overage.
1 bottle of Gillette shaving gel – price: $2.49
1 carrot – price: .19 cents
1 bunch of cilantro – price: .99 cents
1 10-lb bag of potatoes – on sale for $1.38

I bought these items to compliment what I already have on hand, and should be able to get many meals out of it. Here’s my planned menu for the coming week – I kept it really simple, because we’ve been eating out way too much with everything being so hectic. I know if I have something easy to make, I won’t feel so tempted to order out.

Breakfasts:

Cereal, oatmeal, or pancakes/waffles

Lunches:

Leftovers, grilled cheese sandwiches on homemade bread, black bean and cheese quesadillas with chopped onion and cilantro, omelettes

Dinners:

Homemade chili served in homemade bread bowls
Meat and potato pie
Refried beans topped with cheese and served with rice (seasoned with curry powder, chopped onion and cilantro)
Homemade pumpkin soup served with pumpkin bread (I still have several bags of frozen pumpkin puree from last year)

The meat, onion, black beans, and baking supplies for bread and pancakes are items that I already have on hand. I plan on improvising a few more meals from what I have on hand – I’ll probably make burritos one night, and maybe pasta – I like to take stock of what I have throughout the week and use up any leftovers or overripe produce as needed. I like doing Google searches for recipes that call for ingredients which I need to use; I’ve found it’s a really good way to get inspiration and find new ways to use what you have.

Reader Tips: Saving With Homemade Remedies

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Loyal reader Mersida emailed me with this frugal tip for saving on medicine:

“I was at the ENT doctor a few days ago as I was feeling very congested and didn’t know what to do. He prescribed to me something out of the ordinary. Usually doctors don’t mind writing a prescription for Nasonex…which I tell you, costs a lot. He prescribed to me something homemade…a homemade nasal spray. It costs only a few cents per bottle and is more efficient than the ones we buy in the stores (turns out even more efficient than nasonex for me)

Hold off to your old nasal spray bottles as you’ll still need these…

So here we go:

-1 quart of water (if tap water boil it first)
-2-3 heaping tsp of sea salt (NOT the table salt as it contains additives)
-1 tsp of Arm and Hammer Baking Soda (just another use for Baking Soda which I LOVE- I always put half a cup in every load of laundry)
-1 tsp of glycerin (I got a big bottle of this at wal mart (at the pharmacy aisle) for 2.89$. This can go a long way.)

Mix all of the ingredients and put in a nasal spray bottle. Use 2-3 times a day every day. If you have a flu use up to 6-7 times a day. It is such a great and cheap way to feel better and it is already making a difference for me.

Throw away any unused portion of this mixture after 2 months.”

Thank you for sharing this home remedy with us, Mersida! Now that we’re in the thick of flu season (which my household has been battling for a few days), I’m curious to hear what else my readers are doing to save money on medicines. I’ve assembled a nice stockpile of cold and flu remedies that I’ve gotten for free with coupons and rebates – what’s your gameplan?
